Mokume Gane
What is Mokume Gane?

Mokume Gane is a traditional Japanese metalworking technique used to create intricate patterns resembling wood grain. The name means "wood grain metal" in Japanese. It involves stacking and fusing layers of different metals, such as copper, silver, and gold, into a billet. The billet is then forged, carved, and manipulated to expose contrasting layers, forming unique, swirling patterns. Originating in the 17th century, Mokume Gane was initially used for samurai sword fittings but is now popular in jewellery and decorative arts. This time and skill-intensive technique showcases craftsmanship and creativity, producing pieces that are highly prized for their beauty and uniqueness.
